This must be clear to all of my patients: there is no hair transplant technique that is completely scarless. Every surgery involving incisions or extraction will result in scarring at some level.

The follicular unit extraction technique (FUE) avoids the long linear scar that appears with FUT (follicular unit transplantation), but there will be scarring that is apparent on close examination regardless of size of extraction tool even with the most meticulous technique. FUE is a method of harvesting hair follicles. It will leave tiny round dot scars. The scarring is usually subtle and is much less likely to show than the linear scar, and many people keep the donor area trimmed very short without concern. Scarring varies from patient to patient accordingly to how you heal and your skin type. It also depends on what technology and size punches the doctor is using. At the Dr. Ozlem Bicer MD Clicic our Doctor uses 0,6 mm, 0,7 mm and 0,8 mm punches, that means that the little dots will be very minimal. If the FUE punch was large, the scars will be larger.

The FUE method of hair transplant surgery utilizes individual graft extraction from the scalp. Each graft is extracted one-by-one directly from the scalp. No scalp excision is required like with the FUT/Strip method. While no elongated scar is left behind by the FUE method, there is still a possibility for scarring. This comes from the punches that are being made in the back of the scalp to extract grafts.

If you want to keep your hair short then FUE it’s probably the better option. FUT surgery is likely to leave a scar on the donor site, although it can probably be hidden under medium-length hair. The goal of FUE (vs strip) is to replace a long, visible scar with many very small, less visible scars.  If you like to keep you hair long in the back of the head it doesn’t matter which type of procedure is used to remove grafts from the donor area.  If you keep you hair short I would recommend FUE because the extraction scars are significantly less noticeable, but not invisible.

I would like to remind you that it’s possible to camouflage the white dot scars with micropigmentation if you would like.
