Everything you need to know about body hair transplantation (BHT)

In any hair transplant, the scalp is usually used for the hair transplant. However, in many cases, patients do not have a good donor area to serve this purpose. In such cases the hair can e.g. taken from the body, e.g. Beard to head transplant. Some people call it a breast hair transplant, but it is called that because it uses the breast area as the donor area. Although the texture and thickness of hairs taken from other parts of the body will always differ slightly, they still offer significant advantages in many cases, e.g. at:

Limited donor area on the scalp (Grade VII patients on Norwood scale) if the entire area is to be covered.
Given the limitation on grafts that can be removed from the scalp in one session, it is sometimes very difficult to achieve higher density.
Some cases like burns etc.
We can use the hair from the beard and from the chest. Body hair transplants are generally done through the FUE procedure so that there is no linear scar at the end of the operation.
Who should undergo a hair transplant?

Usually we see patients with a very weak donor area, repeated hair transplants, or some type of alopecia. It is important to understand that if the donor area or grafts are weak, there is a high likelihood that there will be a compromise in the outcome. Patients with insufficient hair in the donor area are unsuitable for a normal transplant.

Differences between a BHT-FUE and a conventional FUE

The technique for body hair transplants is basically Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) or piece by piece. The donor sites only extend from the scalp across the chest. BHT is mainly used when the initial donor area is no longer suitable or dense enough to collect donor material.

Then we use the possibility of hair transplantation from body hair. If all physiological requirements are met, then follicular units can be removed directly from different parts of the body – transferred from the chest to the scalp.

BHT grafts are known to have different growth cycles, but a specific study is pending.

Important things about BHT:

The doctor’s experience is important with BHT because the hair on the body is different from the hair on the head.
The experience of the team at BHT is important because the direction and texture of hair are different. Therefore, the same scalp should be mixed with the hair evenly.
The correct extraction of donor hair, storage and hydration of the extracted grafts
The slots that determine the direction should be made very carefully.
Minimum FTR: Taking a careful approach and using the right technique to damage the least number of grafts possible.
